It’s a damn good job. Everyday I get to educate, interact, learn about/ from my students, drop ins, other coaches, old, young, new. I have always worked my ass off but this is something different. This is my passion. This is all me. This is Dave. Everyday I go in and see what I can fix next. In the gym. In the members. What are the weaknesses that can be adjusted/improved. I sometimes just come in to the gym and sit. Watch my other amazing coaches lead classes how I like them run. I see hundreds of people coming in to learn from us. There are no “clock starter cheerleaders” here. Every class is calculated and full of educated pieces so that everyone will leave with more knowledge on how to perform better. You may have heard me explain how toes to bar can be more efficient when perfecting the beat swing/kip a thousand times but that won’t sway me from still teaching it. I show it and say it 3+ times a week but there is always someone who will pick up on a new trick or a technique.
Coaching in a 50% drop-in gym keeps you sharp and on your toes. I challenge every coach out there to look at your coaching and demo portions of your class hour. When was the last time you jumped on the rig and explained a proper beat swing/ kip before having your students start a gymnastic workout? Do you lead a segmented clean warmup up or just have people grab barbells and “warmup”. 60 min is a short time to cram a lot in. But it can be done. We do it every damn day. Find at least 1 Movement Point of performance you can focus on daily. That’s 30 a month that could help your students (even the 5 year veteran) improve. -Coach @davedriskell
